French-Scottish painter Alexandra Rouard lives and works in Saint-Cloud, near Paris. Her work explores the quiet presence of figures, landscapes and the natural world. Long central to her practice, portraiture remains an important part of her work. Through a restrained palette and pared-back compositions, she seeks to isolate her subjects and heighten their presence, leaving space for individual interpretation.
Born in Paris in 1979 into a Scottish family, she spent much of her childhood holidays in Scotland, where her maternal grandmother introduced her to oil painting and drawing. After studying fine art, graphic design and art direction, she devoted herself entirely to painting from 2007.
Initially centred on portraiture, her work has since expanded to include the figure, landscape and the natural world. Scotland, its landscapes and her memories of it remain an important presence in her work.
